Wonderful War Horse

A theatrical sensation
The National Theatre production of War Horse has been inspiring London theatre-goers for seven years, and has been seen by more than four million people around the world. The show has been awarded with some of the West End and Broadway’s biggest prizes, and is now playing to sold-out houses in the USA, South Africa, Holland and Berlin, as well as at the New London Theatre in the heart of theatreland. Experience the phenomenon for yourself by booking cheap tickets to see War Horse with us.

Mesmerising puppetry
Following Joey, the war horse of the title, as he is transported from pre-war English farm life to France and the horrors of the battlefield, the show offers a unique, and moving, perspective on the First World War, and was adapted from the novel by former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo by Nick Stafford.
The show is a collaboration with South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who designed incredible full-size puppets from steel, leather and air-craft cables to bring Joey, and the other equine stars of the show, to life. With the mesmerising work of the show’s puppeteers, alongside the efforts of its talented human cast and award-winning design team, you’ll find yourself transported back in time to the front line. Pick up some cheap tickets for a matinee or evening performance of War Horse and prepare to be amazed.

Award-winning hit
On making its debut at the National Theatre in October 2007, the show was an instant hit with both audiences and critics, and it has been garlanded with plenty of prestigious accolades, including several Olivier and Evening Standard Theatre Awards, as well as the 2011 Tony Award for Broadway’s Best Play. The show has even inspired a blockbuster movie from Stephen Spielberg, and continues to play to packed and enrapt audiences long since it transferred to The National Theatre to the New London Theatre on Drury Lane.

Firm favourite
Suitable for ages 10 and up, the show is a captivating spectacle for both young and old, and has been a big hit here in the lastminute.com office, Melanie, one of our copywriters described it as "Fantastic! A real tearjerker". See it all for yourself by booking some cheap tickets for War Horse at the New London Theatre.

One of the most successful West End productions in recent times, War Horse is based on the internationally acclaimed children's novel by the esteemed English author Michael Morpurgo. It is showing at the famous New London Theatre on Drury Lane, which opened in 1973 on a site that had been used for theatre productions for around three centuries.

The venue, which has a capacity of more than 1,000, once held the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, and hosted the successful Andrew Lloyd Webber production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for two years until 2005.

In this captivating family-themed production, follow the story of the Devon father and farmer Arthur Narracott, who bids on a captured foal in Devon, only to find himself losing out to his overconfident brother, Ted, who bids 39 of his guineas. Despite winning a fair sum of money and giving the foal to his son, Albert, Ted is at risk of losing his farm, which is why Arthur's son, Billy pledges to take care of the foal, named Joey, so that the animal can be put up for sale later.

As the First World War commences, Joey is sold, leaving Albert bewildered, although a lieutenant by the name of James Nicholls has committed to protect the horse but loses his life in the conflict. This means Bill must take care of Joey and ride him to battle, although he too is captured by the Germans in France, where he meets a girl, Emilie, who also loves horse and is looking after her own, Topthorn.

Together, they must continue to care for them at a military hospital, although another German attack is imminent, and there are many more hurdles to overcome in this tumultuous journey of personal bravery and sacrifice.

This stupendous, award-winning show is produced by Nick Stafford, an eminent playwright whose first play was at the Half Moon Theatre in nearby Aldgate, which opened just a year before the New London Theatre.

War Horse premiered at the National Theatre in London's South Bank in 2007, moving to the New London Theatre in 2009, where it won the Olivier Award, the most respected accolade in British theatre.
