The 39 Steps tickets

THE 39 STEPS, a brilliant and hilarious stage recreation of Alfred Hitchcock's classic spy thriller, is the world's favourite comedy and has now been seen by over 3 million people in over 39 countries. The wonderfully inventive Olivier Award winning show features just 4 fearless actors playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action.

This blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women.

One of the funniest shows in the West End at the moment, The 39 Steps is an unrivalled triumph of British comedy which has been delighting audiences in London since 2006.

Brilliantly written, superbly performed and impeccably staged, this is a show that will make you laugh out loud again and again, and possibly cry. Book The 39 Steps tickets with lastminute.com for a genuinely unforgettable experience.

The show is based on the classic 1915 novel by John Buchan - but although it retains the basic plot, that’s where the similarity ends. Where the novel is an absorbing thriller, the stage show is a comedy that’s equally gripping for completely different reasons. Just four actors - three men and a woman - play a mind-boggling 139 characters between them, sometimes moving between roles without even going off stage. The non-stop humour ranges from subtle to slapstick. But the comedy comes as much from the staging as the script - the production is a send-up of itself.

Set in the early part of the last century, the tale revolves around handsome adventurer Richard Hannay. Just as he is complaining that his life is a little dull, a mysterious, glamorous foreign stranger turns up at his home demanding that he keep her safe from the two men outside pursuing her. The next morning, he wakes up to find she has been murdered in his apartment - and he is in the frame. What follows, as Hannay flees both the police and the villains, is a tumultuous tale of spies, secret agents, great escapes, double - crossing, false identities, death-defying physical feats and, amid all this, love. And it’s all played out by a truly tireless cast.

If you’ve seen Hitchcock’s less-than-faithful 1935 film adaptation of the book, you’ll find the show has more in common with that than the original novel. Indeed, Hitchcock fans will delight in keeping a tally of all the subtle and not-so-subtle references to the director’s wider body of work.

The Telegraph described The 39 Steps as “delightful” and “witty … a dizzyingly entertaining show that never outstays its welcome”, with the Guardian adding that “the theatrical tomfoolery is to die for.” The New York Times described the show as “absurdly enjoyable”. Our own copywriter liked it so much she went to see it twice, and is looking for an excuse to go a third time.
