This coastal town in Portugal's Algarve region has two distinct sides. In the daytime it's all sandy beaches, coastal walks and golf courses. But in the evening the Old Town comes to life - there's an independent outdoor market, and seafood restaurants by Fisherman's Beach (make sure you try the sardines). Then it's party time. If you want to avoid the intense heat of the stifling summer months (you do) then visit Dubai in May. Opt for a floodlit game of golf, or head out on a hair-raising desert safari, where you can race over sand dunes. Elsewhere, The Mall of the Emirates has an indoor ski slope to cool down on, and don't miss the annual Al Gaffal Traditional 60ft Dhow (boat) race.
