Stratford-Upon-Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon

The Bard’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon is rightly proud of its connection to the life of William Shakespeare. But there’s also a lot more to see in this historic Warwickshire town, and a stay in a cheap hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon puts you among beautiful scenery, fascinating buildings, and excellent shopping.

“The play’s the thing” (Hamlet)

Fully immerse yourself in Shakespearean Stratford-upon-Avon by taking a tour of the buildings in town connected to his life, including the wonderfully restored Tudor manor house where he was born, and his wife’s residence, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.  And while in town catch some world class theatre at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Their interpretations of the Bard’s works continue to launch new acting talent and draw big names, and they also specialise in staging modern classics, new plays and spectacular family-friendly productions.

“Look on beauty, And you shall see 'tis purchased by the weight” (The Merchant of Venice)

Stratford-upon-Avon has its origins as a market town in the medieval period, and it’s still a great place to shop today, and you can use the money you saved on a cheap Stratford-upon-Avon hotel to pick up some bargains and unique items. The town centre is home to big high street brands, but still retains its historic character, and regularly hosts a Farmer’s Market where you can find excellent local produce. Bards Walk is an attractive shopping arcade, with some recognisable high street chains, as well as local gift and fashion boutiques, a gallery, and several cafes and restaurants. While among the town’s historic side-streets you’ll find antique and book shops and, in an historic building just by the river, the Arter, an emporium for local artists and designers.

“…tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in everything.” (As You Like It)

Surrounded by lush countryside, and with the River Avon and the Stratford-upon-Avon canal running right through its centre, Stratford-upon-Avon is an idyllic spot of traditional England, and a stroll or cycle along the River Avon Trail, passing many of the town’s sights and its peaceful recreation grounds, is a lovely way to spend a sunny day. A stay in a hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon is also a great starting point for seeing the rolling hills and picturesque towns and villages of the nearby Cotswolds.

“I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it” (As You Like It)

Stratford-upon-Avon is a particularly beautiful town, which has acquired a number of architectural points of interest over the course of its 800 year history. In particular be sure to visit Compton Verney, an impressive art gallery housed within a grand 18th century house and gardens, just a short drive outside of town, and the Holy Trinity Church, which has its own close links to the Shakespeare story.  And, with many of the hotels in Stratford-upon-Avon being wonderful period buildings, you can really feel part of the town’s history during your stay.
