I don't normally write reviews, but just got back from a stay here with my girlfriend and we decided to write a positive one for this hotel. We had booked our stay as a mystery hotel and having read the reviews we were dreading coming to it. However we were pleasantly surprised, Here's a quick summary: The room was very clean and smart although quite small. The breakfast had a wide range and was good. Location is brilliant due to it's proximity to Stazione Termini. Staff are friendly and helpful. Also, we didn't have bed bugs and don't be put off by previous bad reviews. Enjoy Rome! Close

I, like many others on this site, had already booked the hotel through lastminute.com as a 'secret hotel', so coming onto this site afterwards to check it out wasn't to advise me whether to stay here it not; it was more a case of preparing me for what was in store. With so many scathing reviews, I was prepared for the worst, even laying some money aside to change hotels if really necessary. But it wasn't that bad. Starting with the positives, this is literally a stone's throw away from the main station (Roma Termini), which saved a taxi fare on arrival. It's also near plenty of other attractions - I walked around the City almost all of the time. It's five minutes from the Opera, a good fifteen-twenty minutes walk to the Colusseum and a similar distance to many other attractions. The area that the hotel's in isn't dodgy as such, but it's certainly not one of the nicer areas of Rome. I put it down to being near a train station - in London you'd probably have much the same thing in a similar location. Now the negatives... many people on here had complained about bedbugs or over starched sheets. Not one to take chances, I brought along my silk sleeping bag liner and used that on the bed, so I can't comment on it. But to the hands, the sheets did feel quite chemically treated. It certainly wasn't the same as 4* bedding I'd seen in other hotels during my trip. The only thing which really annoyed me on this trip - many on here had complained about tiny TVs in the room. I was stunned to find a 32 inch flatscreen on the wall of my room, but couldn't find the remote. When I went downstairs to ask where it might be, I was told that I'd need to be a 10 euro (refundable) deposit to use a remote control as the televisions were so new. Out of principle, I refused to pay this. I was still able to operate the TV manually, but this meant getting out of bed to change the channel or volume so I didn't watch it that much. This was a really pointless policy of theirs which is another thing which I am certain a 4* hotel (or even any hotel with a sensible business model) wouldn't do. The facilities were OK, but again, not 4* standard. The room and hotel generally were relatively dated, but some of the furniture in the room was nice (solid wooden desk with inlaid marquetry), if you appreciate that thing. The bathroom was a mild disappointment. Perfectly functional and with marble walls/floor, but the age/condition overshadowed the very use of such material. The soap dish in the shower was rusty and the dimensions of the bathroom were slightly inconvenient. The complementary products were fairly basic; you might expect a bit more from a supposed 4*. The thing is, due to the deal I got online, I was only paying about £42 per night for this hotel. I think I got what I paid for. It certainly wasn't 4* and I think if I went again, I'd happily go for a 3* in the same area. Close

To get the negatives out of the way, firstly the room was very hot, air condition didn't appear to work (but we just left our window open all day and came back to a cooler room!) No Iron in hotel . Bar/ drinks room was shut for our entire stay. Room was slightly on the small side with a small wardrobe ( I think they have built the rooms around the concept of short breaks and people not spending hours in there room, fair enough Rome is all about the sights) That's it now the good bits.... The hotel is in the most convenient location literally a three min walk to the main train and bus station, it is in a nice part of Rome with plenty going on, many places to eat and drink, Internet, phone shops all within two minutes of your hotel. The Termini itself is like a shopping mall worthwhile taking some time out to have a peek around that. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful, giving directions, maps and advice. Always a smile when we returned in and were never bothered by my endless questions. The entire hotel is spotless, our rooms were cleaned everyday, fresh towels and sheets and the beds were the most comfortable I have slept in. gorgeous. And no we didn't have bed bugs!! To round it up, if your looking for a friendly, clean , convenient, central hotel then the Champagne Palace is for you , enjoy! Close

Toilet cramed into a corner so if your taller the 5ft then you have to sit awkwardly. Either they had beg bugs or starched their sheets so much that you wake up itching all over. The bed in a standard double room was acceptable, it felt however, a big bed was squeezed into a single room. Staff are friendly and helpfull. Great central location for buses, metro and train for the airport. the champagne palace delivers standards and services of a basic bed and breakfast, as they are lots of these arround statione termini. So dont waste your money here, if you want a four star standard.! Close

I thought I had found a bargain with this hotel, but everything about it was disappointing. The room was tiny and boiling hot. The management refused to activate the air conditioning on the basis that it was October (even though it was blistering outside). Our fridge was broken so everything in it was warm but, typically the water in the shower was tepid. It was so hot at night I was unable to sleep, occasionally, in desparation I would open a window but the noise of the trains was tortuous and meant that I was still unable to sleep. Breakfast was bordering on inedible (stale bread with slices of mortadella and kraft cheese I think) I think Rome is the most fabulous city on earth and even this horrible hotel couldn't spoil it but I wouldn't recommend this place to a dog. I complained repeatedly and eventually was given eur 40 off my eur 400 bill (for 3 nights). Close
