stayed in this hotel and paid on checking out €199 euros but when I booked on website it was supposed to be €179. The noise levels were unbelievable. I wanted to dine in the restaurant but it was fully booked because of a wedding (they should have let me know this when booking) Rooms were very average small tv no coffee / tea facilities no air con and we could not work out how to turn heating down, so opened the windows, I checked out at 9am because I couldn't stick it any longer, honest opinion is a glorified hostel but had some nice toiletries Close

Booked the Clarence via Last Minute.com 'secret hotel' promotion, so my own fault for trying to save a few quid, although still ended up paying 150 Euros a night and that is double what they should be charging for this run down B&B. Was described on last minute as being a '5 Star boutique hotel. A contemporary and luxurious hotel that offers the best in Irish hospitality. Set on a prime location in Dublin within walking distance to all shopping and sightseeing areas, its rooms are designed to provide the guest with refined, simple and elegant accommodation. Perfect for any ocassion' To be fair the location was great (On Temple Bar so loads of noise and people until the early hours), the service was polite (They say hello and open the door for you when you arrive) and the room clean and simple (I imagine the stains on the bath, carpet and tiled floor will never come out no matter how hard they try). That's as good as it gets I'm afraid. If you want to stay somewhere special in Dublin then this is not the place for you. Close

Very disappointed in this hotel which us rated 5 star. The Clarence was like staying in a boarding school in the Soviet State ? very Spartan, just wooden panelling and grubby chipped white walls ? no pictures on the walls except for a sad pencil outline of a jug in our bedroom!! Kept expecting to bump into mother superior and order lights out!! The very small bathroom had a wooden panelled bath, plastic shower curtain, wooden toilet seat and wooden pegs to hang your towel. The floor was a sandstone one but was filthy with ingrained stains. Bit like my grannies house years ago - but her floor was spotless! It was comical for a 5 star hotel. No tea/coffee making facilities in the very small bedroom either and the 'computer screen' turned out to be the TV. Bedside tables and dressing table were bits of dull granite 'resting' on wooden furniture. All finished off nicely with rat brown velour curtains - tasty they were not! Their ?Octagon Bar’ looked like something your Dad would’ve had a go at making for his shed!!!! I ordered a Bombay gin in the dingy bar only to be told they didn’t have it - again re-inforcing the Soviet State feel. The 'dining room' bore a very close resemblance to a church hall hosting a 'wee tea'. Amusing to stay at it just cos it was for 1 night only. I would have freaked if it was for the weekend but we were able to cross the Quay and enjoy the opulence of the Cocktail Bar at The Morrison. Anybody understand exactly how this hotel got 5 stars? I am just back from a business trip to Dublin where we brought a group of clients to the clarence. Our entire experience was fantastic, the hotel was perfect. The last time we stayed in Dublin we were in the morrison hotel which is just across the river because the rate was so good, but this time we got a great rate (E159) at the clarence and it was worth every penny. The clarence far surpasses the other hotels in the area for everything, but mainly the staff. they were brillant, right from booking to when we were leaving. they could not do enough for us. I had a room overlooking the river, it was a suite so i had a nice bit of space. one of my colleagues on the same floor had a little balcony over looking temple bar, which was simple, but very comfortable. The hotel is not a stuffy five star, it is relaxed and cosy and we really did feel like it was our own private home. It has a great restaurant and i don't remember at what time we left the bar, so it must have been good!! The hotel was great value for money, compared with other hotels in the city and its location is perfect. The next time i am coming to Dublin i will be staying at the clarence. Close
