We stayed around Hogmanay time and the Hotel was busy. Despite this the staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. It was 5-10 minutes walk to Edinburgh Castle as you walk up the Royal Mile which is around the corner from the Hotel. It is a little off the beaten track, but perfect as they offer secure valet car parking which is essential in this town as parking is difficult otherwise. It is advisable to book your parking when you book your room to get a better rate. The hotel is modern, clean and is within walking distance of everything you want to do in the city. I would recommend this to anyone staying in Edinburgh who don't mind a little stroll into town. I have stayed in many of the Macdonald Hotels and have never been disappointed by any of them. Close

I booked this hotel at a very good rate for a 3-day midweek stay on a room only basis, and wasn't disappointed in any way. First impressions were excellent - a lovely clean reception area with lots of polished wood, a very pleasant bar area towards the back, and a comfortable seating area with flame-effect gas fire near the door. The room I was given was on the 2nd floor, right next to the lift... I was initially a bit wary about the possibility of related noise, but I hardly heard a thing. The actual room was nicely decorated, in a good state of repair, large and comfortable with a fridge and small safe in the wardrobe, tea & coffee making facilities, air-con, TV, large work desk, iron/ironing board, trouser press and table and chairs. There's also a drinks stand on the table with 4 glasses and an ice bucket (you need to call room-service for ice), and a bottle of sparking water is provided on arrival. A nice touch is that wired internet access is provided free of charge in the rooms, but you need to take a cable... if you forget, you can buy one from the concierge desk (£10). The layout of my room was an L-shape, which made it feel a bit more like an inverted junior suite, with the bed in the area nearest the door, and the desk around the corner. Bathroom was excellent - spotlessly clean with everything you'd expect to find, and a fantastic power-shower. Breakfast at the hotel costs £13.50, and I personally feel this represents good value for money - for that, you have unlimited access to the buffet (cereals, fruits etc.), unlimited fruit juice, tea/coffee, freshly made toast, and a choice from the cooked menu. I found the service to be very friendly and efficient , and started wishing I'd had breakfast there every morning instead of just on my last day! If you choose dine out, head up the alley between the Tun building and Pizza Express just next door - this takes you to the bottom end of the Royal Mile, where you'll find plenty of eateries and pubs. The leisure club is located in the basement on the -1 floor... I found this to be exceptionally good, with a very modern gym, large well-heated pool, large sauna and steam room, and all in an excellent state of repair. The only suggestion I would have is that they could provide more seating by the poolside. It was never a problem when I was there as the hotel wasn't anywhere near full, but during busier times the pool area may seem a bit crowded. All the staff I encountered during my stay were extremely courteous and helpful at all times... no request seemed to be any trouble for any of them, and I feel sure that if I'd had any issues, they'd have been dealt with efficiently and effortlessly I found this to be an excellent hotel, and would certainly stay there again if I could get it for as competitive a rate as I did this time. We stayed at this hotel for a long weekend for my birthday and it was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful and it was great enjoying the hearty Scottish breakfast while admiring the view of Arthur's Seat. Great location, next to the Scottish Parliament and The Palace of Holyrood, and 15 minutes walk to the castle. Nice indoor pool and spa facilities. We hope to return. Close

We were in the hotel only this weekend and we had a great time. The service, the rooms and all the stuff in general were great. Defenetly a hotel worth going to. Will go back soon
