Arts and culture
Founded by Greek traders around 600BC, Marseille has a rich history and strong links to the sea. There are more than 20 museums dotted around the city. The Musée des Docks Romains focuses on activity around the port between the 6th century BC and the 4th century AD. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille (museum of fine arts) and the city's natural history museum are both located within the stunning Palais Longchamp, and are certainly worth visiting.
Marseille is home to some fabulous historic buildings and breathtaking architecture. Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde is a beautiful Catholic basilica occupying the highest natural point in the city and offers stunning views of the area. Abbaye Saint Victor, a medieval abbey close to the port, is also worth visiting for its wonderful stained glass windows and fascinating crypt.
You find no end of shopping opportunities in Marseille, with shops and market stalls to suit all tastes. Prado Market, held daily, stretches along Avenue du Prado from Périer Metro station and features stalls selling everything from clothes to fresh fruit. Pick up a bargain at the city's flea market Le Marché aux Puces de Marseille on Avenue du Cap Pinède, or if you're after some of the day's catch, head to the Vieux Port where fish is sold right off the boats each morning.
Centre Bourse is one of the city's top indoor malls. It's situated in the heart of the city in Square Belsunce and is home to some 60 retail outlets and department stores, along with a number of bars and restaurants.
Eating, drinking and nightlife
Marseille has something for everyone when it comes to dining out and evening entertainment. Chez Etienne is regarded as one of the best pizza restaurants in the city, and La Garbure offers fine cuisine from south-west France in an intimate setting. Toinou Les Fruits de Mer is a must-visit for lovers of seafood. You'll find the freshest catch here, ranging from oysters and clams to mussels and lobster.
