"Location Is Perfect But All Else Detracts"

3.0/5

Thu 23 May 2013 SF Bay Area

The Kensington Close Hotel is the victim of its own success and relies too heavily upon its location, which does not excuse or compensate for the failures in customer service and presentation. Upon arriving for check in I was second in the queue. Two clerks were at the desk, one with a piece of paper on the counter but no customer. She refused to help those waiting, stating she was "helping a customer". The second clerk was in training and had two supervisors observing him. After about ten minutes the person in front of me told me (and the now very long queue behind me) that she had been waiting for 20 minutes. The clerk with the invisible guest eventually disappeared into the side office and the clerk-in-training nervously peered at the queue. His supervisors never once glanced at us. Finally someone behind me shouted that another clerk should be made available. Only then did someone go to the side office, poke their head in and ask for help. That help took another five minutes. After a full 30 minutes in the queue, I was finally helped by the clerk in training. This check in process was appalling, especially when the tour desk directly behind us was filled with staff doing nothing and several uniformed/suited staff meandered aimlessly through the lobby. I originally asked for a room away from the lifts. None were available due to a slightly early check in. If I wanted to check in, then I must take a room by a lift and by the fire doors. All totally fine because my time is money and I wanted to get out and enjoy London. When I got to my room I found the lift two feet from my door was totally boarded up and under construction. I found it very odd that the clerk did not know that one of the lifts in the hotel was completely out of service. The room itself was fine, however small details detracted from the overall experience. The bathroom lighting was the worst I had ever seen. Tiny sunken pinpoints of light were placed over the toilet and midway to the sink and mirror. Other than that, nothing. No window, so seeing oneself in the mirror to get ready was impossible. The rubbage bin in the bathroom had a large dent and the fan stayed for about 15 minutes, even after turning off the lights. A very loud fan, I might add. The red chair in the room had a dribble or stain of questionable fluid right down the front of the cushion and the chair. I had to turn it towards the window to keep my stomach settled. The pillows were flat as paper and the sound from the fire doors slamming at night was very disturbing. I understand the need to have the fire doors closed at night, but not sound proofing them is perplexing. Upon check out I found that my credit card was charged the entire amount of my stay as a pending transaction. Most hotels charge one night only. I found the practice of charging the entire stay annoying. Did they think I would abscond without paying? Also, as this was the end of my long trip, I had to switch credit cards to pay the final bill as the "pending charge" took up the balance on the card I wanted to use. Not being able to use my preferred card was not appreciated and I felt I should have been told about their accounting practices when my credit card was originally taken. I was also annoyed that the woman handing out coupons in the lobby as guests entered ignored me each time. Perhaps as a single traveler she thought I didn't want a dinner coupon. Fine, but a smile or hello would have gone a long way. On somewhat positive note, I had did have to request assistance one night to ask my upstairs neighbor to stop exercising/jumping up and down and security came right up and took care of the problem. The bell staff were cordial and helpful and the location? Well, the location cannot be beat. The Kensington Close has gotten a bit too big to pay close attention to the finer points that matter to a traveler who, let's face it, has plenty of options in London. Lack of attention to customer service, room cleanliness details and institutionalizing its business practices may bring in the big tour groups but travelers who expect a more personalized touch will look elsewhere. I certainly will next time.

"Average, not value for money"

Tiny room, air con didn't work (even after 2 requests to fix) room therefore extremely hot and stuffy, great shower (once repaired on request), very handy for Kensington High Street and tube. Very pleasant concierge staff.

"What a difference 3 months makes or was it the 7th floor verses the 2nd!"

I risked this hotel again having been really disappointed with my room the previous visit. Well was a pleasant surprise. I arrived at reception and they knew I needed a quiet room - same grade as previous visit. I was on the 7th floor - all the corridors were refurbished so I felt optimistic about my room and was not disappointed. Fantastic, comfortable, well designed and spotless with great temperature control. Used the bar and althought the staff were rushed off their feet as one told me they where 3 members down the service was first rate. Now in the tourist season the prices seem to have risen steeply but if I can be assured of the same standard of room I will visit again. I stayed in 727.

After some 30 years we returned to the Kensington last Saturday night The Hotel overall was good. Food excellent. Male staff very helpful and pleasant. However the female staff all seemed to be from the same mould, stroppy to say the least. However excellent location for central London.

"Mould everywhere in the bathroom"

Such a disappointment. Luckily it was just for one night. The bathroom was shocking. There was mould on the tiles, walls, ceiling, window and the slatted blind. So much so that I didn't even have a shower when I left, we just got up early and escaped. The carpet in the bedroom was black with dirt at the edges. Air con unit didn't work properly. It was a horrible experience. When we complained at check out, the receptionist said well we booked a standard room.
