"Barcelona Break"

3.0/5

Sun 12 May 2013 england

Large room, plenty of storage space. Still no tea and coffee making facilities. Had unfortunate fall in shower as the floor is extremely slippery. Staff pleasant and helpful. Would recommend that the final bill is read carefully as we found later that a bar charge we did not have had been added and the room rate was increased for the last two days although this was not in the cost advised when we booked.

"Good location"

We visited Fira Palace in April 2013. Overall, Fira Palace feels like somewhere between a 3* and 4* quality hotel. Although old, the rooms were clean, spacious and included large beds (although with squeaky springs), a safe and a office desk. The toilet had both a bath and separate shower which is unusual. The location of the hotel is very good, being only a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Plaza de España train station. However, some facilities seem to be lacking for an equivalent international 4*. The hotel only has a single restaurant and bar. Although the servers at the restaurant were polite, the restaurant is very small, bland and overpriced. It is only also open to 11 pm, which seems a little early in Spain where some restaurants start opening at 9 pm. For the few nights we were there, the restaurant seating was in the dark "glasshouse" conservatory and not the bright luxurious looking restaurant shown on their website. Furthermore room service was only able to offer chicken or vegetarian sandwiches off the room menu, although the full menu consisted of a large range of items - presumably because they couldn't be bothered to make the other items. Overall, we thought the service and room were quite good, but the dining disappointing.

"Its a constructionsite - not a hotel!"

I guess this hotel will be great when its all renovated...But for the coming year(s) ...it's not a hotel - it's a contructionsite. So if you don't mind waking up at 8 a.m when they start tearing down the bathroom under your room, smashing glas and bricks, if you like contructiondust, only one lift working and so on - then you will like it. I did not. I wanted a quiet holiday - not a building ground!

"Can't wait to return."

We had a 3 night stay at this fantastic hotel. The rooms are being renovated to a very high standard. We had a standard room and they are massive. The bathroom has a bath, separate shower room and a toilet with a door making a cubicle. There is a safe which you don't need a degree to use. A mini bar, no kettle best to take your own. A very comfortable king size bed. Modern telly, no english speaking channels apart from the news channels. If you are after views this hotel is not for you. About 5 min walk from buses and metro. On the Airport bus it is the first stop. 5.90 euros. We had breakfast and although it seems expensive it is very good. Fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, meats, cheese etc: We had a problem with our first room as it was new and had a paint smell. We were offered another room with no question this was in the middle of the night and given complimentary breakfast every day. All the staff were excellent from the Manager to the room staff. Lots of good bars in side streets and not far from the main street with the more expensive places to eat.

"Overrated. Shame.Eerily quiet. Poor value"

What a shame. The hotel is in a good location - much better than the touristy Ramblas and is a great base. However - visitors beware - The rooms are big and clean but there is nothing else to recommend them. Usual big chain style with little character. Not cheap at £130 a night. No mirror in the main room. No trouser press, no iron. No view. Usual rip off mini bar. No tea / coffee making facilities beyond room service. Hotel swimming pool is deceptively tiny ( about 6mts x 12mts ) and is full if there is more than 4 people in it. Towels and Keys two floors up if you can find anybody to help - not customer friendly. Nobody ever in the gym.Main reception areas are eerily quiet at all times - some areas not even lit. Nobody ever in the hotel bar - nice enough but expensive. The pictures that advertise the hotel could have been taken at any time. Nobody around. Breakfast for two @ 34 euro - absolute rip off and you will be eating practically alone. Presumably customers are elsewhere taking advantage of much better value fayre available in the plentiful local bars and restaurants. It seems that they survive only because they have good conference facilities, and companies may well be happy enough about that. Not much to recommend it for a tourist visit
