"A pleasant hotel near the heart of Vienna"

4.0/5

Tue 21 May 2013 Boston

We stayed at this Hilton in Vienna for five nights, and used it as a home base, much as we would a cruise, to meander through central Europe. It was a pleasant experience from many perspectives. The reception desk was professional and very courteous, with rapid check-in and service. The corridors are of elegant designed, the wood trim is lovely and not excessive. Our room was quite large, the desk area fully anticipating the requirements of modern travellers for multiple plug-in devices. Closet space was ample. Free Wi-fi was available, but required a daily call-in to the front desk for multi-digit code numbers and password, a nuisance that technology can eliminate. The concierge Gabor was exceptionally helpful and friendly, and arranged, without a hitch, our various daily tours to Salzberg, Budapest, Bratislava and, within Vienna, a city tour and a concert and wake-up calls. The hotel's location (depending on your fitness level) is a short walk to the historic center of Vienna, with its myriad historical museums, elegant shops, impressive old Europe architecture, churches, Jewish museum. The lovely coffee shops, restaurants offer ubiquitous servings of wiener schnitzl and apple strudel, torts and other delicious pastries. The Hilton's own eatery, the Nasch, offered relatively inexpensive, delicious tapas (white asparagus soup, veal meatballs, beef stew, vegetarian delights) that were impeccably served by courteous and attentive wait staff. The breakfast buffet was delicious, the pumpkin seed bread extraordinary, and a stark contrast with the "so-called 5-star hotel" Golden Ring in Moscow. Some of the negative issues with this hotel would have jaded me considerably if the staff and other amenities had been mediocre, but these more than compensated for shortcomings. I rated this hotel four, but not five stars for the following reasons: the room furniture and archaic TV (with non-functioning remote volume control) badly need upgrading, as drawers became stuck each time I opened them, the bathtub faucet leaked slightly and constantly. If you are not long-legged (and even if you are), the bathtub required mountain climbing harness/gear or a ballet-style split or cartwheel to enter if you want to avoid twists, slips or fractures. One of our recommended tours required a van transfer to the city bus station, a long wait, then a ride in an inter-city public bus to Bratislava, with a long stop at the Vienna airport (!) on the way. It took over 2.6 hours to complete a journey that should have taken 1 hour. The tour guide who met us in Bratislava bus station. Michal, was such a gem, with an encyclopedic grasp of the city's highlights, that he instantly erased the annoying journey from Vienna. A trip home via the Danube was a welcome alternative to another series of bus rides. All in all, the excellent service, staff courtesy, cleanliness, location, and esthetic charm of this hotel are excellent. I highly recommend it.

"Excellent service, great location"

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for a week while we toured Vienna. I'm a Hilton Diamond member and stay at lots of Hilton properties. i disagree completely with any suggestion that the hotel is unfriendly. I had some of the best service at this hotel I've had in some time. From the front desk to the executive lounge, all staff were very friendly and helpful. A special mention of Gabor, a concierge at the hotel, is warranted. Simply superb service and a great gentleman. The ladies in the executive lounge were outstanding. The food quality in the lounge was excellent, and we met several very nice folks from all over there. There are some downsides. The hotel is older and it is showing its age in some areas. We had the "Frank Lloyd Wright" suite and while very large and comfortable, its furnishings are dated. I understand the economics of this - hotels can't upgrade constantly and stay profitable. That said, some "freshening" is in order. The bed, however, was very comfortable and our room was very clean and well maintained and serviced. The location is ideal for the old city of Vienna. The tram is literally 50 feet from the front door, and walking to the museums and other sights is 10-15 minutes. Perfect for us as we like to walk to things. The subway is also next door and an ATM is also about 50 feet from the front door. Gelato place across the street is also good. Overall, only the dated furnishings prevent me from giving the hotel 5 stars. Everything else is first rate and I highly recommend the hotel. The staff above all makes it excellent.

"Stuffy, dated and unfriendly"

Staying in Hilton Vienna Plaza Hotel was a big disappointment and a sad experience. Its décor and furnishing is very dated, rooms are stuffy and air-condition barely functional, room carpets and armchairs appear not very clean and full of dust, window curtains difficult to shift and easily fall from the rails. On the top of that reception staff is unhelpful and not very pleasant, and apart from the restaurant staff, there was none who would be courteous and smile (!) All look preoccupied, tired and disinterested. We were allocated a double room on the first floor. It was specious but its décor and furnishings were dated, TV set was at least 40 years old (!) The worst was that the room was stuffy and too hot. With windows firmly shut and air-conditioning at full power, temperature in the room would not change. We spoke to the receptionist who shrug her shoulders and informed us it cannot be changed. Her colleague asked us to go underneath the sink in the bathroom to check whether the heating was switched off. None would offer us any assistance. After repeated complaints, they eventually gave us an electric fan, two days later! Vienna Plaza hotel definitely is not up to a standard expected from such a renowned hotel chain as Hilton. It is more like a 2 or 3 star hotel with unfriendly staff. I will never recommend it to anyone. The only plus is that the hotel is located within a walking distance from the city landmarks and close to the metro and trams.

"A Beauty Past its Prime"

The Hilton must have been so very special when it was built. The rooms are very large, marble bathrooms also, and the hallways are wide and quiet. But the Hotel is certainly not 5-star now. The AC was not working well and a maintenance came up at 10PM to check it out; what wonderful service! We certainly looked forward to lovely breakfasts here as part of our tour, but sadly we were once again our tour group was fighting for food and a place on which to set it down. Management needs to address the issue of accommodating space/time for tour groups that are on a very tight schedule. And breakfast looked great! I just couldn't wait to find a seat but wound up eating what I could manage to secure in the lobby. Not a great way to start your day. The bar was quite nice but part of the lobby proper so bar noise and people spilled out of the designated area. The Hilton is beautifully located on the Ringstrasse and such a easy venue to hop on the electric tram for sightseeing. Old town is about 20-minute walk and the pedestrian center is ideal. With a few tweaks the Hilton can regain it's 5-star status.

"Great staff and location!"

Location was within walking distance of all the major sites. Staff was professional and courteous. Hotel is kept up very well, but definitely in need of modernization in the rooms. Overall, a very good value with all the necessary amenities. If an option, get the executive floor rooms as the executive center serves (free) excellent breakfasts, snacks, coffee, etc, and has a nice outside patio as well.
