Located in one of the most popular seaside resorts in the UK, Weymouth hotels are surrounded by bustling beachside stalls, sprawling sandy stretches and the ancient cliffs of the Jurassic Coast.
Offering some of the finest coastline in the country, Weymouth Beach is a three-mile stretch of golden sands. Whether you plan on swimming in the water, lounging on the land with a good book or digging sandcastles with the kids, the beach is an excellent place to spend sunny summer days. Along the beach is Weymouth Seafront, where you’ll find a staggering collection of shops selling everything you could ever need for a trip to the beach. The seafront is home to Sandworld, an engaging attraction where you can see impressive sand sculptures from some of the best sand artists in the world. There is also room to try your own hand at making sand sculptures as well as a dedicated play area for kids.
Also within reach of the town centre is Chesil Beach, an enormous 18-mile-long pebble beach that stretches from Portland to West Bay. The Fleet Lagoon separates a lot of the beach from the mainland, giving the area its own spectacular landscape unlike most beaches you’ll see in the UK.
Weymouth is also set on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site that covers the coastline from Exmouth to East Dorset. A walk along the coast takes in 180 million years of geological history, covering the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The coast is very popular with fossil hunters and if you’re lucky you might uncover a trilobite or two during your visit. Even if you’re not searching for fossils the coasts are a beautiful area to explore, whether you’re travelling with family or planning a romantic getaway.
Away from the beach Weymouth has a variety of amusements, from traditional English seaside fairgrounds to modern arcade centres. One of the most popular attractions in the town is Weymouth Sealife Adventure Park and Tower. The Sealife Adventure Park features over 1,000 animals, including Black Tipped Reef Sharks, Green Sea Turtles and Humboldt Penguins, as well as an underwater walk-through tunnel and a water park, complete with splash pool and water slides. The Sealife Tower reaches 53m in the air, offering breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding coastline.
Weymouth has an extensive range of high street chains as well as a fantastic selection of boutique shops scattered throughout the main town area. One of the most pleasant areas to visit if you’re looking for some retail therapy is Brewers Quay, an arts and craft emporium housed in the former Devonish Brewery. Brewers Quay has a number of excellent antique shops and art galleries. You could very easily spend a good few hours perusing the fascinating objects and paintings on display.
Travelling inland from Weymouth will take you to Dorchester, home to The Keep Military Museum and The Dinosaur Museum. If you drive east along the coast you’ll soon reach Bournemouth and if you drive west you’ll soon come across Exmouth.
