Located in south-west Switzerland in the canton of Valais, Verbier is a village ski resort in the Swiss Alps and is actually a string of interconnected ski villages. Recognized as one of the premiere ‘off-piste’ resorts in the world, Verbier’s excellent après ski options make for a vibrant atmosphere and attract a younger than average clientele. Verbier enjoys sun-kissed, panoramic views of snow-clad peaks and mountain sides, and once visited, its popularity comes as no surprise.
Verbier is a long-established Alpine destination and boasts a wide range of expert ski schools offering children’s lessons to advanced one-on-one tuition. The area immediately surrounding Verbier boasts 100km of pistes, off-piste options galore and snow parks for those wanting to practise flips and tricks. A modernised lift system makes getting around easy and fast.
Enjoying the thrill of being on the pistes is no less feasible if you have reduced mobility. Verbier offers the opportunity to sit-ski, taxi ski, Vertiski or Handiski and provides the equipment and fully qualified guides to assist.
Other winter sports
Skiing is, of course, seen as the main winter sport in the Alps, but here is a short list of the numerous other popular activities available: snowboarding, heli-skiing, glacier walking, air boarding, ice karting, ice climbing, tobogganing, skating, curling and paragliding.
Air boarding is a bit like body boarding on the surf, with an inflatable board. Available for just about any age group, this is a supremely fun activity.
Never heard of heli-skiing? It’s being lifted to an off-piste area by helicopter, and should only be attempted by extremely experienced and brave skiers!
Once the winter season ends, skies are replaced by mountain bikes, climbing and watersports equipment. A refreshing and exhilarating summer activity is canyoning. Suitable for anyone over the age of about eight, with the safety of a guide you can abseil down cascades, splash into pools via natural water slides and ride the river rapids. Choose from short beginners’ routes or longer ones.
Food, drink and nightlife
Verbier’s range and quality of restaurants is amongst the best you’ll find anywhere in the Alps. Traditional Swiss fare, international influences and French haute cuisine can all be found within a stone’s throw of each other and with a wide range of prices.
On a sunny plateau in Clambin, surrounded by the alpine forest, cosy Chez Dany has a legendary reputation, so it is well worth booking ahead for your tartiflette, cheese fondue and lamb shank.
Verbier boasts some of the best après ski and night life in the Swiss Alps, with its vast amount of fashionable bars, traditional-style pubs and cosmopolitan discos. Bars open from 15:00, but if you want to dance the night away, try Carve, an underground night-time destination with cocktails, a large top shelf, an abundant supply of magnums and guest DJs.
The best Verbier hotels and chalets combine Alpine architecture with 21st-century mod cons and you’ll find a wide range to suit your tastes.
