Nuneaton is a large market town in the English country of Warwickshire, in the West Midlands. It is famous as the birthplace of the author George Eliot and some of the settings in her novels are based on the town.
Recently Nuneaton has enjoyed something of a renaissance with arts and culture once more at the forefront of its identity. Due to its location in the heavily populated West Midlands, Nuneaton hotels also offer an inexpensive base from which to explore this great region.
The Great Outdoors
Unlike many of the towns in this part of the world, acres of stunning countryside are within easy walking distance of Nuneaton’s centre. Ramblers and outdoor enthusiasts must visit Hartshill Hayes Country Park.
The park is mostly made up of wonderful woodland and contains a large variety of trees, flowers and wildlife. As spring nears, the woods become awash with colour, especially purple. This is because Hartshill Hayes is home to one of the largest concentrations of bluebells in England, making a spring day walk a truly magical experience.
If you like more high-octane, and wetter, outdoor pursuits, then take the family down to Bosworth Water Leisure Park. The 50-acre park has lakes for dinghy sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and fishing.
For those who are keen to learn, the park offers lessons in all of these activities, and all of the equipment needed is available to hire. The kids will have so much fun at Bosworth they will want to stay the night, and this is not a problem for the park has caravan and camping facilities adjacent to the beach and lake area.
Of course, not everyone’s idea of fun involves being hurled in and out of the water. For a more leisurely afternoon activity, take the Brewery tour at the award-winning Tunnel Brewery.
The Tunnel Brewery grew from a micro-brewery to become one of the West Midland’s biggest beer suppliers. The tour is incredibly informative and takes you through the entire brewing process. And don’t worry, there are opportunities at the end to sample some of the brewery’s products.
After a day out on the water, or in the brewery, you’ll no doubt be feeling peckish. Luckily, Nuneaton has some great restaurants serving up food from all over the world.
My Treat is a lovely place to go for lunch. This local café has great coffee and sandwiches, and a wonderful tea room.
For something a bit more substantial, head to Anthony’s. This restaurant serves up modern British cuisine at an affordable price and has a brilliant atmosphere.
