Hotels in Madeira

This outstanding Portuguese archipelago is known for its lush vegetation and is famed for its high quality wine. Today, Madeira attracts visitors all year round, and is home to the historic port of Funchal, which has been the archipelago's capital for more than 500 years.

The capital

Whether it's via majestic cruise ships or by plane, many people travel to Funchal to see the city's formidable Gothic-style cathedral, which was dedicated in the 16th century and is known for its elaborate processional cross. The city also contains the beautiful green district known as Monte, which offers superb panoramic views and can be accessed by taking a spectacular gondola lift, the Funchal Passenger Ropeway.

Cabo Girão

For other wonderful panoramic views, head to the Cabo Girão cliff, which is almost 600m high and now contains a glass-floor platform. The cliff, which is one of the highest in Europe, is on the southern coast of the main island and is the perfect spot for holiday photographs.

The Pico Ruivo

The highest mountain in Madeira, Pico Ruivo is particularly prominent due to its proximity to the sea and its elevation at 1,861m. The mountain is popular with ambitious hikers, although people are strongly advised to check the weather conditions and forecast before venturing all the way to the top.

Pico do Arieiro

Another prominent peak, Pico do Arieiro attracts tens of thousands of visitors each month and can be accessed by road. Here, you can enjoy more superb views, and, if you're up for a challenge, walk along the footpath to the Pico Ruivo.

Climate

One of the highlights of Madeira is its very agreeable climate. Winters are typically very mild to warm, and the summer months are generally very sunny and considerably more pleasant, temperature-wise, than many other holiday destinations in the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

Dining ideas

For delightful Portuguese cuisine, dine at the impeccable Sabores do Curral - Valley Flavours, or chose the Taberna de S. Vicente for other delicious Portuguese and Mediterranean-themed dishes. If you're looking for tasty tapas, choose O Tasco, or try the Central Restaurant if you're a big fan of mouthwatering Brazilian food.
