Reclaim the streets! Unless your name is Jeremy Clarkson you should find Ghent makes for a refreshing change. You can walk through the cobbled streets of historic Ghent without fear of being mown down - because this is the largest car-free area in Belgium.

With over 900 listed buildings, Ghent survived the bombs of the World Wars and still boasts streets of medieval architecture.

Vlaanderenstraat is ideal for boutique chic, with a mêlée of coffee and cake emporiums and lovely, styled-up B&Bs. Pop to Patershol to see curios in the Museum of Things That Never Pass before settling down for a meal in one of the many restaurants - and later, an ale at quirky At Dulle Griet where your shoe serves as a deposit for the beautifully carved-wood beer tankards.

The castle and cathedral are must-sees for the Ghent newbie. As is the old Graslei harbour with its fabulous buildings ideal for a wander at night.
