Unlike much of New Zealand, Auckland's no visually stunning stunt-double for Tolkien's middle-Earth. It is, however, down to earth. A cosmopolitan and vibrant city, and a great place to spend a few days before exploring the rest of the country.

Make sure you visit the observation decks of the 1,076-foot Sky Tower. Most people exit the building via the lift, but even suave, urban Auckland's not immune from the Kiwi penchant for high-adrenaline action - you can now bungee-jump from the summit. While falling at 85mph, you may notice Auckland's spectacular harbour, although you probably won't have time to count the dozens of volcanoes that sit under the city. Don't worry - the last major eruption was 600 years ago.
