If you were kidnapped, blindfolded and thrown out of a van in Iceland, in your dazed state you could be forgiven for thinking you were on another planet.

The black, volcanic landscape looks like it could be home to aliens, but the free-thinking, puffin-eating locals are a friendlier bunch, and (thankfully) speak better English. In Reykjavik, Björk meets you at the airport (ok, that's a lie she doesn't live there anymore) and Blur's Damon Albarn owns one of the local bars. That bit's true.

There are also plenty of soaring geysers to admire, as well as the sulphuric waters of the Blue Lagoon for a steamy dip.

Hotels here were once prohibitively expensive for the casual traveller, but Iceland's recent financial turmoil has had an unexpected upside for cash-strapped visitors.
