Bowness-on-Windermere hotels for poetic landscapes
The Lake District's most popular destination, Bowness-on-Windermere is busy all-year-round. Halfway along the 12-mile length of Lake Windermere, the Victorian resort developed with the opening of the railway line from Oxenholme and Kendal.
Immortalised as the town of Rio in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, Bowness was also beloved of poet William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, and it's not hard to see why. With dramatic hills and romantic vistas, it's the perfect place to revisit literary classics and bask in the stunning surroundings.
It's also very popular for sailing. You can charter rowing and motorboats, and steamers operate regular passenger tours of Windermere from Bowness. Spend a while cruising around the water checking out the grand residences, many of which are now luxury lakeside hotels, or stroll around the town taking in the galleries, giftshops and tea rooms.
