Both cosmopolitan and bohemian at the same time, Berlin is a beautiful contrasting city with a genuine, laid-back and liberal feel.
Whether you’re interested in taking in some beautiful architecture, letting your hair down in the city’s famed party hotspots, or soaking up this destination’s multi-layered history, you’ll be sure to find something to keep you entertained.
It might be that your perfect city breaks in Berlin involve strolling through picturesque forests, parks, and along the rivers and lakes. You might even like to visit one of the city’s zoos, like the 19th-century Zoologischer Garten Berlin. In this unaffected and gorgeous place anything’s possible. It’s all about making your trip your own, so you have a memorable holiday.
Berlin is a major European centre for arts, education and culture, and you’ll be able to find intriguing venues on almost every street corner.
Museum Island is a good, although admittedly more obvious place to start. This great place is a hotbed for anything arty and cultural with around 140 museums and 400 art galleries set within its boundaries. And it’s a World Heritage Site.
Outside Museum Island there are lots of other places to explore. You can see the Painting Gallery with art pieces from the 13th to 18th century, or perhaps you fancy heading down to the Jewish Museum, housing a stunning collection in celebration of German-Jewish history.
The city has a big music heritage, especially in the dance scene. It’s also now home to Universal Music Group and MTV, so expect lots of great music venues in this vibrant place.
If you time your trip right, you can go to one of Berlin’s many festivals like the Carnival of Cultures, the Lesbian and Gay City Festival or perhaps JazzFest Berlin.
For the perfect evening out, visit famous music venues such as SOUND, The Weekend Club and S036. Or for a classier experience, try The Deutsches Theater, The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra or one of the city’s three opera houses.
With a blend of Michelin star restaurants like Facil and Fischers Fritz, and cosy eateries and cafés, there’s somewhere to suit every mood and budget in Berlin.
Other popular places include Restaurant Buntspecht if you’d like to sample some authentic German food, Heising for French cuisine, and Il pastificio for tasty Italian dishes.
To round the evening off nicely, why not head to one of the city’s bars. Some top picks include the notoriously subversive Barbie Deinhoff's, the ultra-relaxed Die Weinerei where you rent a glass and top wine up as you go, and the trendy Bei Schlawinchen.
