The Catterdrale di Sant’Andrea really is a must-see for any visitor to the town. Parts of the building date back as far as the 10th century and the cathedral has an impressive Baroque interior. Make sure you don’t miss the cathedral’s huge bronze doors which were the first of their kind in Italy, and were made in Syria.
If you’re keen to further explore the history of the town you should visit the Museo della Carta, which is housed in a 13th-century paper mill. The mill is the oldest in Europe and contains some excellently preserved paper presses. The Museum offers guided tours in English which provide fascinating insight into the original production process which used cotton as the base for the paper. The museum also has an excellent gift shop, where you can pick up some great souvenirs like calligraphy sets and special paper pressed with flowers.
Italy is famed the world over for its cuisine, and Amalfi’s a great place to sample some of the country’s best food. Being a coastal town Amalfi is renowned for its sea food, and a great restaurant to try it is the Marina Grande which sits on the main beach front. The restaurant has its own private section of beach and specialises in seafood and traditional pasta dishes. If you fancy some pizza then you should head to Donna Stella, which serves great homemade pizza amongst its lemon-grove setting.
If you want to fully experience all that the beautiful sea has to offer you should book yourself onto a boat excursion. The trip will take you along the entire Amalfi coastline and circle around the island of Capri. The tours also offer the chance to see many of the famous grottos dotted along the coastline. When you feel like taking a dip yourself, the boat will stop so you can take a relaxing swim.
