From Vikings and skiing to sculpture and slides

If you studied the Vikings at school then come and refresh your memory at The Viking Ship Museum. The top place in Scandinavia for all manner of Viking memorabilia, the star exhibits are three Viking ships, two of which are in an astonishingly good state of preservation.

Another hugely popular attraction is the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. As well as being a major sporting venue for ski championships, it attracts thousands of tourists each year who come to gaze at the iconic ski jump and to visit the fascinating Ski Museum. Ever wondered what if feels like to fly down the world's toughest downhill ski slope? Then have a go in the ski simulator, which combines flight simulator movements with an eye-view movie.

The Vigelandsparken Sculpture Park is a world-class attraction. Set in 80 acres, it's filled with over 200 bronze and granite sculptures by the artist Gustav Vigeland. The theme of the park is the 'Human Condition' and the various figurative sculptures are depicted in different moods. Another hugely popular park – especially with children – is TusenFryd. The biggest amusement park in Norway, it has everything from rollercoasters to water slides.

Get out on the water

Because Oslo's Harbour on Oslofjord is at the city's centre, a sightseeing cruise is an excellent way to get a feel for the place. It's also a good reminder of Norway's great seafaring tradition. You can see many of Oslo's main sights from the water as well as the magnificent pine-forested hills rising up in the distance.

Fly straight to the heart of the action

The main airport in Oslo, is located 45km north of the city and the super-efficient Airport Express Train, Flytoget, whisks you from the airport to the City Centre in 19 minutes. If you prefer, you can take an express bus, hire car or taxi.
