I want to be a part of it, New York, New York
Empire state of mind
The tallest structure in New York, the Empire State Building dominates the skyline no matter where you are in the city. And up close it looms overhead, like some gigantic Art Deco rocket ready to launch into space. Ascend to the observation deck on the 86th floor for unparalleled views of New York State.
The City that Never Sleeps, so the saying goes but it is possible to enjoy respite, and commune with nature in the heart of the Big Apple by passing some time in Central Park. In fact, it's possible to spend all day within its verdant 843-acre ambit without getting bored. Whether walking, cycling or reclining, as you gaze at the cityscape which dwarfs the Park's trees, there's lots to do. It's the ideal place for a jog too. As you move around the park, see if you can spot the Alice in Wonderland sculpture and the Conservatory Water with its model sailboats and check out the Imagine Mosaic, a tribute to John Lennon. And walk across Bow Bridge, one of the park's most photographed sights.
Art and cinema
Cinephiles will love Film Forum where the city's discerning movie-goers head to for a range of programming that includes indie flicks, documentaries and art cinema from around the world. There are regular retrospectives too, focussing on works by directors and writers like John Boorman and Tennessee Williams.
The Museum of Modern Art contains works by contemporary masters. Once you've finished there, head across the East River to discover the artists du jour of the very near future at PS 1 Contemporary Art Centre.
Eating, drinking and nightlife
Manhattan's Upper West Side is the home of Lincoln Square Steak where the décor and ambience is inspired by a New York of 50 years ago. Dine on succulent steaks and exquisite seafood while quaffing a delicious world wine.
Everyone seems to be in a hurry in the city, which is why sandwich shops like Faicco's Pork Store are an absolute boon. And, by all accounts, you'll find some of the best sandwiches in NYC.
True to its name, Beyond Sushi pushed the envelope on what you expect from traditional sushi by creating a 100% vegan eatery that uses fruits, vegetables and whole grains to create a delicious and nourishing sushi roll.
