Cluj-Napoca itself is the second largest city in Romania, and considered to be the unofficial capital of historical Transylvania. The centre of the city is at St Michael's Church, which was originally constructed in the 14th century. Important locations within Cluj-Napoca include Babes-Bolyai University, Romania's largest site of higher education, and the largest commercial bank owned by Romania. 2015 also saw Cluj-Napoca awarded the title of European Youth Capital.

Parks and culture

Cluj-Napoca has a pleasant atmosphere, with many national parks and gardens giving the city an overall sense of tranquillity. The Cluj-Napoca Botanical Garden is one of the primary tourist locations, originally founded in 1872.Today, it is part of Babes-Bolyai university, where it also provides facilities as a teaching and research centre. It covers over 14 hectares of ground, and is home to over 10,000 plants from worldwide locations. The individual garden sections throughout the Botanical Garden are themed, and historical monuments and statues also feature. The middle of the city is where Cluj-Napoca's Central Park is found, featuring the Chois Casino and a lake on which visitors can rent rowing boats and hydrobicycles. Cluj-Napoca embraces its history, and has many displays on offer at its museums. The Ehtnography Museum of Transylvania features many local arts and crafts, as well as traditional clothes, fabrics, tools, and pottery. The Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park is a secluded destination that acts as a showcase for preserved local buildings, including wooden churches and artisan houses.

Food and cuisine

Cluj-Napoca prides itself on the wide choice of restaurants available throughout the city. These enable visitors to sample local Romanian, Hungarian and Transylvanian dishes, as well as excellent examples of Italian, Japanese, Mexican and American foods.
