Flights to Athens this weekend
Cheap flights to Athens
The city of Athens is one of the world’s most important pieces of history, so it’s no surprise that it is becoming more and more popular to visit with lastminute.com. The capital of Greece, Athens is one of the oldest cities known to man and was famously the home of the Olympics. On your trip there you will be in no shortage of interesting history and entertaining things to do in the Greek heat.
Digging up the history
Athens has plenty of historical locations to see on your travels. A great way to see all of them quickly can be via tours. Half day tours are available to take you through a combination of modern and ancient Athens and usually only take about three and a half hours, often on comfortable coaches with experienced guides. If you feel like exploring the city quickly in your own group then the increasingly popular Segway tours can be a great way to have a look around.
Hop-on hop-off buses are popular and cheap. Simply buy a ticket and get back on at one of the regular stops once you have explored the areas you want to. Athens looks even more beautiful from the water, and boat cruises have become a staple of the city. The cruises range enormously and you might want to consider longer or shorter tours that see different parts of the city. Of course, if none of that is for you then a simple walk around the city will show you much of its beauty for free.
Things you have to see
Athens is host to a few must-sees that have proven popular with tourists for years. Whilst in this ancient city people flock towards the Acropolis of Athens. This ancient town centre was fortified when the Greeks originally built it, and has stood up to thousands of years of weathering. The buildings themselves sit on top of a large rocky outcrop and make a great afternoon adventure.
Not far from the Acropolis you’ll find The Parthenon. This temple has stood since 447 BC and remains one of Athens most famous attractions. Finally, before you go home you will want to see The Temple of Olympian Zeus. Formed from huge decorative pillars it is an impressive sight that lots of people never get to see.
Learn about the city
Once you have seen the beautiful architecture and remnants of ancient Greece there are a great selection of places to learn more. The Acropolis museum can tell you everything you need to know about the old city centre, and for those who want to build a more substantial knowledge the National Archaeological museum has tonnes of great facts about Greek buildings.
