WICKED, the multi award-winning classic musical, has been acclaimed as "one of the greatest musicals of our time" (Daily Mail). Now the 8th longest running show in the West End, and still soaring high at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre after more than 4,000 performances, this global phenomenon has already been seen by more than 7 million people in London alone.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Gregory Maguire that ingeniously re-imagined the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
One of the most beloved musicals in West End Theatre, Wicked brings to life the notorious Witches of Oz and a completely new perspective of the renowned 1900 novel 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'.
The book was written by the distinguished American writer and dramatist Winnie Holzman, who was born in New York City and has also enjoyed an illustrious career as a screenwriter and actor. Few people will be unfamiliar with the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, which earned two Oscars and four Oscar nominations, and was one of the first films to be produced in Technicolor.
In Wicked, you can follow the friendship between two girls: the green, unpopular Elphaba and the beautiful, well-known Glinda, who meet while studying at Shiz University. However, the girls start moving in very different directions, as Elphaba seeks to stay true to who she really is, while Glinda becomes blinded by the temptation of power and popularity.
The story follows from the Land of Oz, where one powerful monarch controls the four lands of Winkie Country, Gillikin Country, Munchkin Country and Quadling Country, which are inhabited by various populations. However, some of the people in these lands have never even heard of the queen, and the monarch, Princess Ozma, is eager to visit these people because she sees it as her duty (as described in the 1920 book Glinda of Oz).
Wicked has garnered enviable reviews in the newspapers, and has been described as a show that 'works like a dream' by the London Evening Standard and 'one of the greatest musicals of our time' by the Daily Mail.
As you might imagine, the show has received many prestigious awards since its inception, including an Olivier Award for Most Popular Show (2010) and a This Morning Audience Award (2015). It has also earned numerous Drama Desk Awards, multiple Tony Awards, more than two-dozen Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, and the Best Musical Award in lastminute.com's very own People's Choice Awards.
Wicked is held at the famous Apollo Victoria Theatre in Victoria, which opened in 1930 and can accommodate up to 2,500 guests. Over the decades, it has hosted many internationally renowned productions, including The Sound of Music (1981-1982), Starlight Express (1984-2002) and Saturday Night Fever (2004-2006).
The theatre, now Grade II listed, is very close to Victoria Railway Station and Underground, and is also in walking distance of Buckingham Palace and Green Park.
Packed with thrilling technical wizardry, dazzling costumes, a remarkably funny and emotional story, and show-stopping songs (by multi GRAMMY® and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz), Wicked is a "big-hearted musical extravaganza" (Time Out London) that is not to be missed!
"A WICKED AND WONDERFUL VISION OF OZ. A remarkable kaleidoscope of magical shocks, surprises and sensations, Wicked works like a dream."
