The Mentor - London

Benjamin Robin is a cantankerous old writer, whiskey aficionado and pedant, still basking in the reflected glory of long-ago success. Martin Wegner is a rising young literary star, heralded as “The voice of his generation”.

When Martin is given the opportunity to develop his new play under the mentorship of his idol, the two writers meet and two massive egos are set on a collision course in this perceptive and compelling comedy about art and artists and the legacy of fame.

Written by Daniel Kehlmann and translated by Christopher Hampton, this is the first play by Kehlmann to be performed outside of Germany. Directed by Laurence Boswell, an Olivier Award-winner, The Mentor cast features Homeland star F Murray Abraham and Daniel Weyman (Nicholas Nickleby, King Lear and Kafka's Dick) as Martin.

What is the play The Mentor about?

In The Mentor, a writer with past successes agrees to mentor Martin Wegner, an up and coming literary star. When the two meet in the German countryside, however, their egos start to collide.

The Mentor play has received fantastic reviews, described as having "the aura of an event" by The Guardian and "a witty comedy" by The Sunday Express. The Sunday Telegraph commented that F Murray Abraham "exudes an entertaining air of desiccation and disdain" while The Mail on Sunday wrote that ‘Abraham gives the most mesmeric comic performance in the West End’.

F. Murray Abraham won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Salieri in the film adaptation of Amadeus (1983). His other screen roles include 'All the President's Men' (1976), 'Scarface' (1983), 'Star Trek: Insurrection' (1998) and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' (2014). He has starred in Broadway plays such as Angels in America, A Month in the Country, Triumph of Love and most recently It's Only a Play.
