In 1994, Disney released its 32nd animated film in which a curious young lion named Simba grows up safe and secure within his father, Mufasa's, territory in the plush greenness of the African Pride Lands until tragedy strikes and his world is turned upside down. The Lion King has become a firm favourite with both adults and children around the world due to its lovable and loathable characters, humour and sing-a-long soundtrack. Due to the success of the movie, three years after its release, Disney Theatrical Productions brought The Lion King to life on stage in Minnesota in 1997. Within the same year, the show was taken to Broadway, New York at the New Amsterdam Theatre where it remained until the summer of 2006.
The performance found its current home at the Minskoff Theatre with its colourful vibrancy of costumes and set design, choreography and the fantastic musical score which has been produced by the legendary Sir Elton John, Time Rice and Hans Zimmer. After Phantom of the Opera and Chicago, The Lion King is the third biggest show on Broadway having amassed almost £1 billion since it appeared on stage and has won numerous awards. With five star reviews from both critics and audiences alike, it is definitely a must see, guaranteeing an amazing theatre experience for all ages.
Located in the heart of Manhattan on 200 West and 45th Street, the Minskoff Theatre is easily accessible: Buses 119, 129, M20, M55 all have drop offs in and around Broadway and the subway lines are 2, 3, E, N and R will be appropriate to reach the theatre. One can also catch the train from either Journal Square Station or a train on the Northeast Corridor Line.
The Lion King on New York Broadway performs daily shows from Tuesday to Sundays. Tuesdays offer a 7 p.m show, Wednesdays and Saturdays offering matinee shows at 2 p.m and Sundays at 3 p.m. The show lasts for 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a short interval of around fifteen minutes. Tickets are available for children from ages four years plus, and the theatre can cater for large groups with appropriate notice.
