What is The Great Gatsby about?

This classic story explores the social history of America during the Roaring Twenties, including the evolution of jazz music and flapper culture. When Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota, moves to New York in the summer of 1922 he becomes intrigued by a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion and throws extravagant parties every Saturday night. He soon meets the enigmatic Gatsby and enters a web of intrigue which will change his life forever.

This enduring tale of Gatsby and the American Dream has been adapted numerous times over the years since its publication in 1925. A silent film was released in 1926, followed by a 1949 version starring Alan Ladd and Betty Field. A 1974 version starred Robert Redford and Mia Farrow and the story was revived in 2013 for the hit film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. There was a TV adaptation in 1955 for "Robert Montgomery Presents" and a 2000 TV film starring Toby Stephens, Mira Sorvino and Paul Rudd. An opera of the story premiered in 1999 at the Metropolitan Opera, written by American composer John Harbison. The Great Gatsby London theatre production is sure to do justice to this impressive legacy as the drama unfolds before your eyes.
