The Bodyguard musical has been a runaway success since it first opened in 2012, and features a selection of the best Whitney Houston songs as well as host of other hits. One of the most successful and critically-acclaimed theatre productions in recent years, it's a show that will delight audiences, who may have to stifle their urge to sing along with every song.
The show star is Beverley Knight, who has played lead character Rachel Marron off and on since 2013 in venues across the country. The production stays loyal to the original premise of the film, adapting the lead character to the present day. Familiar Whitney Houston songs such as I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, How Will I Know, One Moment in Time and I'm Every Woman will all be sung on the stage by Knight, who is well-known for her soulful, powerful voice.
The Bodyguard has been hailed as one of the finest contemporary musicals around, with critics and audiences alike applauding the romance, laughs and songs of this dazzling performance. The story focuses on Rachel Marron, a superstar performer with a stalker, and the ex-secret service agent charged with keeping her safe. As we make our way through hit song after hit song, the mismatched pairing slowly but surely begin to fall for one another, creating a narrative that is romantic, funny, dramatic and always engaging.
Not that this show is all about the story, or the songs. The set is spectacular, as are the costumes, and it's a slick, high-quality production that leaves nothing to chance. The brains behind the show is an all-star creative team that could be in a who's who in the world of London theatre. It was adapted for the stage by Thea Sharrock, with Tim Hatley contributing the designs, Mark Henderson the lighting and choreography by Karen Bruce. The talent extends to the front of the stage, too, with Ben Richards starring opposite Knight as agent Frank Farmer.
This show is a must-see for fans of Whitney Houston and the original Bodyguard film, but they're not only ones who will enjoy this award winning production; any fan of theatre and musicals will find something to love in this show, which always promises to be one of the best nights out in town. This is a performance that features a little bit of everything to create one blow-out, stomping show that lands somewhere between being a concert, play and musical, with a high quality stage production to really grab the audience. The show runs from the 15th July 2016 to 7th January 2017. Shows take place from Monday to Saturday at 7:30pm, with matinee performances on Wednesday and Saturday at 3:00pm.
