This multi-award winning show continues to astound audiences across the world with its universal language of rhythm, theatre, comedy and dance. Eight performers use everything from Zippo lighters, plastic bags, bin lids and even the kitchen sink to hammer out an explosively feel good rhythm. In the summer of 2012, STOMP wowed billions when they took centre stage at the epic closing ceremony of the London Olympics. With new routines, new choreography and new music, STOMP is pure stage magic!
Stomp was invented in Brighton in 1991 by Luke Cresswell - who has since written music for TV and worked with musicians ranging from Beats International to Bryan Ferry – and Steve McNicholas. The show premiered at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh that year, where it became the Guardian's Critic's Choice and won the Daily Express's Best of the Fringe award. A world tour followed, along with a stint at the Sadler’s Wells theatre in 1994, when the show won an Olivier award for best choreography, and a New York run which is still continuing. There has been a Stomp film, Stomp TV shows, an Academy Awards performance and a performance at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012, with 40 cast members. Across the globe, more than 12 million people have watched some 20,000 Stomp performances in 53 countries, and Stomp also runs workshops for schoolchildren.
In February 2015, Stomp set new records for both the highest-grossing performance of any production in the 102-year history of the Ambassadors Theatre, and the highest-grossing Saturday matinee.
The Independent described the show as “bringing the house down”, while the Sunday Telegraph called it “pure stage magic” and instructed readers: “Expect to be amazed.” The New York Times described it as “irresistible”, while the Independent called it “entrancing, exhilarating and uncannily orchestral – terrific.”
