Tap into the rhythm of New York with this captivating show where dance, music and theatre all blend together in a heart-thumping production. Familiar objects like brooms, bin lids and newspapers create a beat that fills the stage with electrifying energy. As a show with no words Stomp breaks language barriers and, with no melody in the traditional sense, it crosses all music genres. It takes the pulse of a heartbeat as the building block for its complex rhythms.
This show's story began in 1991 when Luke Creswell beat out a rhythm on a single drum hung around his neck, since then Stomp has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. Working with co-director Steve McNicholas, Cresswell showed that in the right hands the most ordinary of objects can do extraordinary things. The original Stomp premiered at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh where it won a ""Best of the Fringe Award"" (Daily Express). By the end of 1994, it was playing to sell-out audiences around the globe and had won an Olivier for ""Best Choreography in a West End Show"". Stomp NYC was first seen in the USA in February 1994 where it picked up a Drama Desk Award for ""Most Unique Theatre Experience"".
Now, at any one time, there are several Stomp companies performing at venues around the world and as each company has its own style the original choreography is welded into something unique that plays to the strength of the performers.
Stomp off-Broadway has been performing nonstop at the Orpheum Theatre in Manhattan, New York since it opened in 1994. This 299-seater theatre has seen over 5,000 performances of the show. The venue has been a cinema and theatre since 1904 and is well served by local buses and the subway, while both metered street parking and garages are close by.
The show lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes without an intermission. The box office of the Orpheum Theatre opens at lunchtimes and the auditorium doors are opened 30 minutes before the production starts.
Entry is strictly by Stomp NYC tickets only. It is suitable for general audiences but children must be at least 4 years old for admission. This is strictly enforced. There is no dress code.
