Matilda tells the story of a small girl with a big imagination who quickly learns she has some very special magical powers and uses them to set things right at home and school.
Premiering in 2010 at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Matilda played to sold-out audiences before transferring to London’s Cambridge Theatre in 2011.
With music by British-born Australian comedian writer and musician, Tim Minchin and writing by Dennis Kelly, Matilda is a treat for all audiences. Critics loved the show, with The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, TimeOut and The Sunday Times all awarding the show five-star reviews. The Sunday Times called the show, ‘easily the stand-out musical of the decade’ while TimeOut proclaimed the show would have ‘kids in stitches and adults in tears’.
Picking up a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards in 2012 (and a further four Tony Awards for the Broadway production) it’s easy to understand why Matilda theatre tickets are selling fast. In fact, Matilda now holds the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Laurence Olivier Award wins, snatching the title from a 1980s production of Nicholas Nickleby-another Royal Shakespeare Company production.
One of the youngest theatres in the West End, the Cambridge Theatre opened in 1930 and has historically shown many musicals including Chicago, Fame, Grease and The Jerry Springer: The Opera. Situated off Seven Dials, in the very heart of Covent Garden, the Cambridge Theatre is moments away from public transport including Leicester Square and Covent Garden underground stations.
