While this folktale grew in legend in the 17th and 18th centuries and appeared in many children's books, the original author is unknown. Richard Johnson's ballad of 1612 is the earliest surviving piece inspired by the tale. The story is based on the real-life Dick Whittington, a wealthy merchant born in 1354 who later became the Lord Mayor of London.
You can see Dick Whittington at the London Palladium, a magnificent Grade II West End theatre on Argyll Street. Opened on Boxing Day 1910 with the first ‘grand variety bill’ the venue has hosted more annual Royal Variety Performances than any other theatre.
