She fought her way into the record industry as a teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, when she was just seventeen. By the time she was twenty she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including the Drifters, the Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and the Monkees.
But her greatest challenge was to find her own voice and finally step into the spotlight.
BEAUTIFUL is the untold story of Carole King’s journey from school girl to superstar; from her relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom.
Along the way, she became one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history, and wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

Whether or not you were a child of the Sixties, you’ll know dozens of Carole King songs. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, King has written more than 400 songs for more than 1,000 artists, including The Drifters, Aretha Franklin and the Monkees.

Her remarkable story is at last now told in the musical Beautiful, which opened at the Aldwych Theatre in London’s West End in 2015. Within months of opening, the show had won two Olivier awards for best actress and best supporting actress. It was also nominated for a further six: best sound design, best costume design, best theatre choreographer, best supporting actor, best new musical and outstanding achievement in music for the orchestra. Book your tickets for the Beautiful musical with lastminute.com and discover how King fought her way into the record industry as a teenager, selling her first number one hit at the age of 17. Recorded by the Shirelles, Will You Love Me Tomorrow became the first chart-topper by a black girl group. With her husband Gerry Goffin, whom she married at 16, King wrote more than 50 hits for some of the biggest names in music. (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Up on the Roof, Take Good Care Of My Baby and The Locomotion, sung by her babysitter Little Eva, were among the pair’s compositions. The marriage was wrecked by Goffin’s infidelity and the pair divorced – but this was the catalyst for naturally shy King to find her own voice as a singer. Her 1971 album Tapestry, which stayed in the US album charts for nearly six years, became one of the best-selling LPs of all time. King’s own hits included I Feel the Earth Move, You’ve Got a Friend and It’s Too Late. Written by Douglas McGrath (Bullets Over Broadway, Emma) and directed by Marc Bruni (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Legally Blonde), the musical originally opened in San Francisco in 2013. It moved to Broadway the following year, where it won a Tony award and a Grammy. The Observer, the Evening Standard, the Daily Mail and the Independent all gave the show four stars, with critic Quentin Letts describing the show in the Mail as “uplifting, sweet and happy”. Paul Taylor, in the Independent, called it a “likeable, zestfully performed show” which is “happiest when treating the Fifties and the early Sixties with a tongue-in-cheek wit”. Henry Hitchings, in the Evening Standard, called it “slick, witty, affectionate and enjoyable”.
