The story of Aladdin is a childhood favourite with a plot based on the 1001 Tales of Arabian Nights. Living in bustling Agrabah is a homeless boy, Aladdin. He gets by on his wits and while going about the city he falls madly in love with Princess Jasmine, a seemingly doomed love. If their different stations in life didn't provide enough problems, the wicked vizier Jafar also intervenes in their romance as he has his own plans for the princess. Poor Aladdin finds himself imprisoned in the Cave of Wonders where he stumbles on a magic lamp. After rubbing the lamp, out pops the hilarious genie, made famous by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film. And the rest, as they say, is history.
After previewing across the States and Canada Aladdin premiered on Broadway in March 2014 since when it has received several Tony nominations. James Monroe Iglehart won Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical as the original Genie.
With a clever play on words, USA Today hailed Aladdin on Broadway as ""Pure Genie-Us""; a well-deserved review that gives a huge thumbs-up to this stage version of the 1992 Disney animated film! Beauty, comedy and a dash of magic appear from the stage book of Chad Beguelin, with the score and lyrics written by Alan Menken, Tim Rice and Howard Ashman. They have kept some original and most beloved songs from the film like ""A Whole New World"" and ""Friend Like Me"", as well including some other upbeat numbers. The direction and choreography at the New Amsterdam Theatre are provided by the Tony award-winning Casey Nicholaw.
The New Amsterdam Theatre, located on 214 West 42nd Street in Manhattan's Theatre District, uses its 1,700-strong seating capacity to enthral audiences by showcasing Aladdin. With several nearby subway stations and parking garages, this theatre is easily accessible to all attendees.
The show runs for 2 hours and 30 minutes, including the intermission. Doors to the auditorium open 30 minutes before curtain up and entry is strictly by Aladdin Broadway tickets only.
The production is suitable for audiences 6 years old and over and no dress code is required.
