Art and culture

Out of all of Turin's museums, the Egypt Museum is probably the best known as it houses what is regarded as one of the leading collections of Egyptian artefacts in the world. In fact, it is the only museum apart from the Cairo Museum that is dedicated solely to Egyptian art and culture.

Take the opportunity to learn all about the city's links with the auto industry and car manufacturer FIAT at the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile, which also holds a collection of more than 200 vehicles. Make the National Museum of Cinema a priority if you're a keen film buff. The site holds an impressive collection that includes thousands of movie reels, posters and books.

Explore the city

Get a feel for Turin by simply wandering down Via Roma, the city's main thoroughfare. Stroll from Piazza Castello to Piazza Carlo Felice, stopping to browse in some of the high-end fashion boutiques and stores, and admire the wonderful Baroque architecture.

As the centre of the city is set out in a grid pattern, you should have no trouble finding your way around, or indeed retracing your steps if you wander off course. At Piazza della Repubblica you'll find Porta Palazzo Market, the largest open-air market in Europe. Monday to Friday the square is filled with around 800 stalls selling a huge range of goods from fresh fruit and meats to household goods and craft items.

If you're in the mood to escape the heart of Turin for a few hours, consider making your way to Reggia di Venaria Reale, a former royal residence situated in the north of the city. Here you'll be treated to stunning gardens and magnificent architecture.

Eating out

You don't need to venture far to find an excellent choice of restaurants in Turin. There are dining options to suit all budgets dotted right across the city, so whether you're interested in tracking down a fine dining experience or simply a casual lunch stop, you'll have few problems.

Accademia Del Panino, a popular sandwich spot is known for its use of quality ingredients and affordable prices. Sfashion is said to serve some of the best pizzas in the city, while Restaurant del Cambio is known for its grand surroundings and classic local dishes.
