Skiathos: A Perfect Greek Island Holiday Destination

Skiathos is a Greek island located in the northern part of the Aegean, and is one of the Sporades Islands.  You can fly to Skiathos from London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Newcastle and Bristol.  The nearest Greek mainland port is Volos, with a journey time of around three hours by ferry or 90 minutes by hydrofoil.

Skiathos town, a  very attractive white town with old style cobbled streets, is the main town on the island.  The small wooded Bourtzi peninsula separates the old harbour from the new ferry terminal.  This is the location of an outdoor theatre which hosts various productions during the Summer.  Inside the old school you can find exhibitions of local photography and art.  There’s also a traditional Greek cafe which has live music most evenings during the high season.

Of course one of the main attractions of Greek islands are the beautiful beaches and Skiathos has more than sixty beaches. The most popular beach on the island is Koukounaries, on the southern coast of the island, which boasts a stunning stretch of incredibly white fine sand with crystal clear waters fringed by pine trees.  There are buses twice an hour from Skiathos town to Koukounaries beach. Close to Koukounaries is Banana Beach, a clothing optional beach.  The two other main beaches are Achladies and Agia Paraskevi.

There are plenty of walking opportunities around the island.  Last year, local resident Vasilis Korallis, a Greek-American, led English speaking guided walking tours around old Skiathos town twice a week.

Skiathos is also fun for the younger crowd, as it is well known as the third most lively Greek island night-time destination after Paros and Mykonos.  Three popular nightclubs are Remezzo, Kavos and BBC.

It’s also possible to do day trips to the other Sporades islands of Alonissos and Skopelos by ferry or on a organised tour.  Alonissos is a much, smaller quieter island with stony beaches, designated as a marine reserve as it’s home to monk seals.

  1. I’m a huge fan of the Greek islands too, having previously travelled to Rhodes, Kos, Crete and Corfu. I’m just planning a trip to Cyprus too!

  2. As the tourist season was not as good as it was expected, showing up at a hotel will guaranty that you will be taken in and also that you can bargain up to a point the prices. If you plan to stay in a 5 star hotel, however, you better make a reservation beforehand. Those are the least hit by the crisis, which goes to show what kind of crisis we talk about.

  3. I never made it to Skiathos when I toured around the Greek Islands a few years back but I wish I had. It looks really good and reminds me a little of Amorgos which is one of my favourite Greek Islands.
