Mac is Back
A Bank Holiday is generally enough cause for celebration, but this weekend the bunting will be out for the reopening of the Midlands Art Centre (mac). £15m of refurbishment work started on mac - which nestles on the edge of Cannon Hill Park, just opposite Edgbaston cricket ground - just over two years ago. The closure of such an important arts centre hasn't gone unnoticed and it'll be good to have the place back in action. I've had a look round and the new gallery, the revamped theatre and the Foyle Studio all look superb. More important than the building is the programme of events and exhibitions they're going to use it for. Fortunately, that's looking good too. The cinema programme is the most recent thing to be announced and features all the just-left-of-mainstream fare you'd expect. Performance-wise, we can look forward to Scattered - Motionhouse's dance/visual spectacular - as well as Return by Polarbear. Stan's Cafe have two new shows; the theatre/radio show of Tuning Out with Radio Z and a collaboration with BCMG on called I See With My Eyes Closed. On the musical front, Capsule are bringing Plaid and the Southbank Gamalan Players. There's much more besides, especially with the opening weekend celebrations and all the activities around sampad's 20th anniversary. It's good to have the place back.
