While cream tea, cake, and vintage clothing may be all the rage – there seem to be only a select few who know how to do it right. And if you’ve had the pleasure of visiting TART at 40 Winks, you know that David Carter, who is perhaps the most dapper chap in London, only partners with the crème de la crème of the vintage world.
Hosted at 40 Winks, the whimsical and fabulous hotel and home of Carter, TART offers an array of experiences and services, ranging from a vintage makeover from Benefit Cosmetics to a lesson on ‘40s style from the one and only Fleur de Guerre.
Upon arrival, you’re asked to take off your shoes, and your kitten heels are then replaced with a pair of dainty yet comfortable pair of slippers to pitter-patter around 40 Winks in. (Please do be so kind as to remember to wear matching socks, and make sure your legs and shaven. I can’t image David Carter stands for stubble.)
40 Winks is located in a historic and elegant four storey Queen Anne townhouse built in 1717, every inch of which has been styled and decorated by Carter’s internationally adored styling skills. From McQueen-esque masked and veiled statuettes, to sky-high Marie Antoinette wigs and Union Jack cushions, being at TART is like being transported to Wonderland.
Albeit a Wonderland in the middle of East London, with David Carter as your Mad Hatter, Fleur as your White Queen and the Vintage Patisserie to provide your tea (or cocktails) and the teeny cakes.
TART is an experience, beyond all else. Lasting from two in the afternoon until si and occurring once a month for only £60 a ticket, you’re given a world of opportunity from the best (and best looking) vintage experts in London.
While at TART, you can be booked in to receive a gorgeous makeover from the makeup artist from Benefit Cosmetics. Residing in The Music Room, and armed with their vibrant lipsticks, eyebrow pencils and handy-dandy concealers, the Benefit ladies have TART patrons looking like a ‘20s movie star in hardly any time at all.
After having your makeup done, you can also have your hair styled and glammed up by the fantastic gals from Lipstick & Curls. From soft curls to pin-up rolls, the stylists from Lipstick & Curls seriously know their stuff. So much so, that the girls at TART that havet their hair done squeal with delight when they see the results. Yes. SQUEAL.
But it’s not all about hair and makeup at TART as in the Celestial Chamber you can have your cards read by author and Angelologist Angela McGerr, or have a quick, relaxing massage from Xhilarate in the Opium Den.
Or, if you’re looking to be watered and fed, just travel downstairs and say hello to the lovely dames from the Vintage Patisserie in The Kitchen.
In David’s magnificent Kitchen, you can dine on sandwiches, TART branded mini-cupcakes and chocolates, and sip on Hendericks gin cocktails out of floral vintage China.
Angel Adoree and her fabulous tea maids are on hand not only in the Kitchen, but graciously float all around 40 Winks asking if anyone would like another cocktail or tea.
One of the coolest aspects of TART, aside from the food and drink, or having your hair done just like Dita Von Teese, is having Naomi Thompson from Vintage Secret help style you and give advice on how to shop for and wear vintage clothing.
In the Dangerous Liaisons Boudoir there are fabulous cases spilling over with goodies from What Katie Did and Sereglia. There is also clothes rail stocked full of dresses, skirts and tops from different eras, you can try on and purchase from Vintage Secret, as well as an array of millinery from Ugly Lovely which adds the finishing, glamorous touch to your new glam look.
David Carter explains that he wants to give the women who visit TART a new experience that allows them to explore different looks and styles that they may not be bold enough to try in their every day lives. TART does exactly this, giving you multiple ways to not only relax and have a good laugh and a drink, but as well as trying out different looks, and styles of clothing that you may have only dreamed of experimenting with.
TART is perfect for a girly afternoon out, or even a day out with your mum or sister.
