The Great Unused Holiday Season

Britain has 13.1 million days to still take as holiday… before the end of the year

With just under a month until we usher in this year’s Christmas festivities, new research* by travel and leisure retailer lastminute.com has revealed the number of days Brits are set to lose in unclaimed annual leave.

With more than half (51%) failing to claim their full holiday allowance in 2009, this year looks to follow suit as nearly half (45%) of British workers declared they have unused holiday left to take this year, which equates to at least 13.1 million** days of unclaimed holiday remaining.

Of those with annual leave left to take, more than a quarter (26%) admits to still having five working days or more, with one in ten (10%) willing to sacrifice any outstanding days.

A tightening economy is the main reasons holidays are on hold with two in five (38%) workers citing a lack of cash to go away as the reason why they forgo a day’s holiday.  By contrast, workaholic men use the holiday season as a chance to get ahead with more than a third (40%) not taking holiday so they appear hard working.

Regionally, Scotland are the most organised with nearly two thirds (65%) planning to use up their remaining holiday entitlement before the year is out, whereas in Ireland just over half (51%) hope to roll over any outstanding holiday to 2011.

Nichola Sharpe, lastminute.com’s spokesperson, said “It’s staggering to see how many holiday days could be left unclaimed this year, and it’s even more worrying to look at the reasons why. With such choice in holiday destinations and activities to take advantage of, 2010 has proved a fantastic year in terms of value for money – with a chance to experience something new.  With X number of days to go until Christmas and with nearly half of Brits yet to book their annual leave, it’s now or never to claim that great deal.”
